This course is designed to facilitate the development of communication and leadership skills necessary for positive family, school, and community interactions. Students will examine contemporary issues from both theoretical and practical perspectives and develop strategies for addressing complex educational situations. Particular attention will be given to the ways that institutional power, culture, language, social inequality, and professional assumptions shape relationships among educators, families, and communities.
The course moves deliberately from theory to practice. Students apply theories of equitable community engagement, relational trust, active listening, culturally sustaining communication, conflict transformation, and relational repair through cases, simulations, and partnership design.
