This course focuses on learning how to talk and write precisely about plot, character, setting, point of view, theme, as well as other literary and rhetorical devices in relation to meaning in short fiction. Through the analysis of stories from a variety of time periods, countries, and languages, you will become familiar with the formal and stylistic elements of short fiction; acquire a shared vocabulary for recognizing and analyzing different literary techniques; and develop your reading, writing, and critical discussion skills. The goal of this course is to enhance your ability to critically engage with short fiction using your own ideas while referring to a shared body of knowledge. Discussions and assignments will involve the memorization, identification, and application of concepts and terms essential to the study of literary short fiction.
