The primary objective of the course is to further the concepts learned in the differential equations course (MAT310). In order to extend the theory to deal with the much larger class of equations that have variable coefficients, it is necessary to extend the search for solutions beyond the familiar elementary functions of calculus. Series solutions methods, Gamma, Bessel and Legendre functions, and the Laplace transform will be explored in this context. Elementary trigonometric Fourier series and applications to boundary value problems and certain partial differential equations of physics will also be studied.
