This course is an introduction to the study of the mythology of the ancient Greek world. We will survey several key myths and legends of ancient Greece as they are presented in literature and material culture between the 8th and 1st centuries BCE. We will look at the ancient sources for these myths and consider how they have been preserved, adapted, and interpreted in the modern world. Through the course, we will study the ways myth intersects with ancient society and culture, including literature, religion, visual art, history, ideology, and politics. We will learn to analyze ancient mythological sources not only for the content of myths (what they say) but also for their form and style (how they say it). Some guiding questions are: What is mythology? How are myths told? What can mythology teach us about ancient societies?
