Survey of the methods and theory of classical archaeology in the Mediterranean, from the Bronze Age to the Roman Empire. This course introduces students to the archaeology of the Greco-Roman past, as well as the methods archaeologists and historians use to access it. Students will gain important skills in analyzing ancient material culture, as well as in critically assessing the methods used to study it. The course will prepare students for upper-level courses in ancient history and material culture, or for fieldwork in the Mediterranean. No previous knowledge of the subject is required or expected.
