The mass media has often been regarded as one of the most cogent inventions in the present age. For different reasons, it has been described as a phenomenon that has helped shape how we communicate, relate and cohabitate within modern societies. Its influence appears to be permanently etched in the fibers of our constantly evolving society and its accompanying institutions as it brings value to our lives.
This course therefore explores the intricate connection between the society and the media, especially how the media plays a fundamental role in impacting the development of the society with regards to culture and the direction of the society. It will also attempt to rationalize the basic questions raised by the sustained and continued influence of the media on the modern society.
The course will encourage students to deploy reflective thinking, conceptual clarification and reconstruction of ideas to comprehend, measure and explore the influence of the media on the society using its various categorization. This will be done through presentations, discussions and essay papers with the aim of ensuring that the students acquire requisite knowledge about the operation and influence of the media on the society.
