Non-musician, autodidact and self-taught musicians who would like to be introduced to Music theory or eventually pursue Music studies at Bishop’s are welcome to this class!
Its purpose is to learn the fundamentals of music theory and notation to be
able to read and write a chart. It includes all necessary information and jargon of the basics of music notation. From being to navigate into a staff, key and time signatures, notes and rhythmic figure, scales, chords and intervals, to dynamics and expression notation.

The course also prepares students to enter the Music program theory classes (materials of Music – MUS130 and Musicianship I – MUS120) that are core requirements for a bachelor’s in arts - Music.

The content of the class includes:
- Notes, Rests and Their Time Values
- The Staff, Clefs, Measures, Key And Time Signatures
- Sharps, Flats and Natural Signs
- Basics of intervals to get to Major and Minor Scales and Triads
- Grouping of Notes and Rests
- Performance Directions (dynamics, expressions and other symbols)
