This course will cover key aspects of women’s history in 19th and 20th century Canada with a particular focus on intersectional issues such as race, ethnicity, sexuality, and ability. Moreover, it will discuss significant shifts in social, political, and economic rights for women. The course will begin with an introduction to Indigenous women’s lives and the onset of changes introduced after contact. It will then examine the lives of women in distinct waves of migration from different countries and analyze their patterns of settlement. Overall, this course will discuss settler colonialism and women’s role in establishing the Canadian settler state as well as refuting, resisting, and rebuilding what it means to be Canadian.
