PBI 288 is a basic course, about how the brain develops, functions, and the molecular and chemical substrates that create BASIC behaviors. You will learn these basics interactively and by repetition. Lessons from each weak carry to the next; and you must learn how to build on SCIENTIFIC GROUNS, to generate new "hypotheses" or question certain beliefs. Topics that are covered in this course include:
• Brain development: From Zygot to Person
• Basics of Neuroanatomy and Brain Organization
• Basics of Brain Function (Electrophysiology, Neurochemistry, Brain Plasticity)
• Basics of Brain Generated Behaviors (Memory, Stress and Adaptation, Anxiety, Motivation, Reward, etc.)
This class will require you to:

1. Memorize a bit of how the nervous system works.
2. Navigate the COMPLEXITY of how brain generates different types of signals while it interacts with, learns and adapts to the surrounding environment--the combinations of which gives rise to behavior.

At the end of this class, you should be able to both demystify and debunk stories of about brain and behavior and use the knowledge in this class to guess how the brain and behavior relate, and what research methodologies inform clinical practices.
