We all die. Death is a human affair, not simply a biological one. This course adopts an historical, existential-humanistic perspective in exploring the psychology of death and dying. It privileges first person perspectives on the experience of dying & death and its bearing on our lives. We need to listen to the witnesses: those who are dying and those who care for the dying. Those who are grieving. All of the readings in this course are eyewitness accounts. Drawing on these readings, we will take up the challenge of envisioning a psychology that is responsive to experience. In an important sense, this is not so much a course on the ‘psychology of death and dying’ as your pilgrimage into building your own psychology of death and dying.
