Course Objectives and Teaching Methods

The purpose of this course will be twofold: to familiarize students with the theories of international relations and to train students to think theoretically. Through simulations and exercises, students will thus be expected to critically assess relationships and mechanisms of state behaviour and to identify the most important dynamics.

Each class will be divided into two parts. The first part will consist of a regular lecture. The second part will be either in-class discussion on the subject matter presented and on that week’s readings or group simulation and debriefing illustrating the material covered in the lectures. Throughout the course, the students will be assessed on their participation to the online simulation Statecraft. Students will be required to take the role of state decision-makers and thus experience the challenges related to state behaviour.

The objective of the course is to enable students to better understand existing theories of international relations and encourage studenst to more concretely apply theories presented over the course of the term ot different policy areas in the past, present and future. The course also aims to help students with developing their own critical perspectives in understanding and interpreting abstract concepts in international relations. Through course assignments and participation, students will also be able to practice and improve their writing and communication skills to articulate their ideas and perspectives.
