This is an introductory course from a combined Sociological and Indigenous Studies perspective.  You will learn about colonial policies in Canada and their ongoing negative impacts on the well being of many Indigenous people in these territories.  You will also learn about the sources of resilience in Indigenous cultures and wisdom in Indigenous ways of knowing that have been systemically dismissed and neglected by systems of governance, education, justice and religion.  If you were raised in what is now called Canada, expect to find out that much of your accumulated ‘knowledge’ about Indigenous peoples of these lands was based in myths rather than true understandings.
