This course will cover, in roughly chronological order, various influential movements in the visual arts, starting with the all-over, gestural painting of the Abstract Expressionists, moving between the poles of traditional media (heroic and figurative painting) and newer means of expression (installation, performance, art-as-idea), and confronting as well very recent work. Students enrolling in the course can expect: 1) to become familiar with key moments in the history of contemporary art, 2) to encounter art being made and displayed today, and 3) to begin to develop ways of experiencing – and writing about – contemporary art from their own perspectives.

During the course we will make a trip to Montreal to view Biennale Montréal 2011.
